Dalada Maligawa (or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth
As the most famous attraction in the city and one of the most sacred places for Buddhists from all over the world. Famous for its unique Sinhalese architecture, the temple is located in the royal palace complex and also houses the only surviving relic of the tooth of Buddha. Natha Devale
The oldest shrine in Kandy and dates back to the 14th century. It is one of the finest examples of Southern Indian architecture in the country. The shrine was delicately built by stone and is three stories high with an exquisite domical stupa on top. The highlights include a remarkable bronze icon of the God Lokeshwara Natha and a Sinhalese-styled entrance featuring beautifully ornamented double roofed archway.
Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya
The picturesque gradens are surrounded by the river Mahaweli on three sides. There is a suspension bridge connecting the garden to the other side of the bank which is sure to keep the children entertained while adults can admire more than one hundred varieties of palm trees, glossy foliage and beautiful orchid houses. Rare blossoms and spice trees can also be found in this garden, making it one of the remarkable botanical sites
Udawattekele Bird Sanctuar
Famed for its natural atmosphere and accessibility to the birds. It is situated off Wewelpitiya road and is only a short drive away from the city centre. Native Sri Lankan birds can be seen here including hanging parrots, yellow-fronted barbets and emerald doves. The sanctuary is also home to macaque monkeys and dozens of colourful butterflies.
